Homemade Gyro

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, finely grated
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 pita bread
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • Tzatziki sauce
  • Lettuce for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground lamb, minced garlic, grated onion, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  2. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.
  3. Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat and brush it with olive oil.
  4. Shape the lamb mixture into thin patties or long cylinders.
  5. Cook the patties or cylinders on the preheated grill or skillet for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are well browned and cooked through.
  6. Warm the pita bread in the skillet or on the grill for about 30 seconds on each side.
  7. Assemble the gyros by placing the lamb, slices of tomato, slices of onion, and tzatziki sauce on the pita. Feel free to add lettuce for extra crunch.
  8. Fold the pita over the fillings and serve immediately.
