Homemade Gyro
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground lamb
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, finely grated
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 pita bread
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 1 onion, sliced
- Tzatziki sauce
- Lettuce for garnish
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground lamb, minced garlic, grated onion, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.
- Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat and brush it with olive oil.
- Shape the lamb mixture into thin patties or long cylinders.
- Cook the patties or cylinders on the preheated grill or skillet for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are well browned and cooked through.
- Warm the pita bread in the skillet or on the grill for about 30 seconds on each side.
- Assemble the gyros by placing the lamb, slices of tomato, slices of onion, and tzatziki sauce on the pita. Feel free to add lettuce for extra crunch.
- Fold the pita over the fillings and serve immediately.
