Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 250 g ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • For the sauce:
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes in a large bowl.
  2. Add ground beef, ground pork, egg, onion, allspice, nutmeg, black pepper, and salt to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix until well combined.
  3. Form the mixture into small meatballs, making about 24 meatballs.
  4. In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Add meatballs and cook until all sides are browned and meatballs are cooked through, about 10-15 minutes. Remove meatballs and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in flour until it forms a smooth paste. Gradually whisk in beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Add cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Continue to simmer until the sauce thickens.
  6. Return meatballs to the skillet with the sauce and simmer for an additional 5 minutes, or until heated through.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy!
